That musty smell when you turn on the A/C hits right at startup, then fades once the cabin cools down. It can feel like an old gym bag, damp carpet, or stale basement air for the first minute or two. The annoying part is that you can have great cold air and still deal with the odor. The smell is almost always tied to moisture staying where it shouldn’t. Why Musty Smells Show Up When The A/C Kicks On When the A/C runs, moisture condenses on the evaporator inside the HVAC box. That’s normal, and it’s how the system pulls humidity out of the cabin.
